Helping retail meat inventory move faster, with less manual handling

Prime Range Fresh had a busy retail environment where product moved through multiple workflows before reaching the customer. Keeping inventory aligned with physical stock had gradually become difficult, and manual processes were slowing the operation down


Their environment was fast-paced, high-volume, and not always connected. Products were handled in different forms, across different parts of the store, which had gradually created inconsistencies in workflow and stock control.


Existing tools relied too heavily on manual entry and unique barcode logic. That made processing slower, stock counts less reliable, and inventory reconciliation far more time-consuming than it needed to be.

The existing workflow had evolved over time into multiple independent processes.

The Challenge

Three requirements quickly stood out:

  • Product needed to be managed by both weight and count

  • Scanning needed to be fast and reliable, including offline

  • Product movement needed to flow cleanly into the POS system

This was primarily a process problem.

The Approach

AppyKiwi mapped the workflow across the site, looking at both the physical movement of product and the matching digital movements behind it.

From there, two things happened in parallel:

  • product flow and labelling conventions were simplified

  • a scanning app was developed to support the new workflow

The goal was simple: make scanning fast, accurate, and usable anywhere on site.

The Solution

AppyKiwi worked with store management to improve operational consistency, while also developing an offline-capable scanning app tailored to the environment.

Key parts of the solution included:

  • high-speed barcode scanning with built-in validation

  • offline-first processing so scanning could continue during connectivity issues

  • local device storage for resilience, with bulk cloud sync in the background

  • barcode mapping for supplier-specific codes

  • production run tracking for inwards and outwards movements

  • POS integration via REST API to keep stock data aligned

Most of the processing was designed to happen on the device itself. That kept the app responsive and reduced reliance on constant cloud communication.

The Result

The new process gave Prime Range Fresh a much cleaner link between physical product movement and digital stock records.

Outcomes included:

  • manual tallying was removed

  • barcode validation reduced scanning errors

  • product handling became more consistent

  • supervisors gained clearer visibility of stock movement and yields

  • stock processes became faster and more reliable overall

What had previously been a messy, manual process became a more structured and dependable one.
